Chapter Eight

Unable to help himself, Brennan discreetly followed Wilson as he left Clancy's office with a copy of the filed divorce papers. It had been almost a week since his mate had learned the truth of his wife. Brennan was damn happy that he hadn't had to be the one to reveal that Shandell wasn't faithful.

All week, he'd continued to spend his afternoons with Wilson at his shop---except for Tuesday, when he'd left early to get his walking cast off. He still hadn't so much as kissed the man, although he'd been damn tempted on so many occasions. As he'd promised his mate when he'd first begun courting him at his shop, he wouldn't do anything physical until Wilson could respond without anyone else having a tie to him.

To that end, Wilson had met with Clancy several times that week at the shop. His mate had worked with the fellow wolf shifter on realistic terms and expectations. Clancy had filed the papers that afternoon, and Wilson had picked up a copy with the intention of giving them to Shandell that evening.

Wilson had even had Kendra go to Sierra's house after school for a sleepover.

Personally, Brennan had thought Wilson was way too nice to Shandell, but he'd learned that his human had a kind and giving heart. It was one of many reasons he loved his man. As part of the divorce, Shandell had ninety days to either buy out Wilson's half of the house or sell the place. The papers indicated that Wilson would have full custody, since he was the breadwinner, although he offered open visitation to Shandell.

Brennan couldn't begin to understand the unease that had surged through him upon hearing that. After learning what her brothers had done in the past, he feared what could happen. He didn't trust that Shandell---the entitled, selfish bitch that she was---wouldn't use her daughter as leverage to get what she wanted---namely, not losing her cash cow.

To that end, Brennan had asked Rory to watch over Kendra, even while she was at Sierra's house.

And that's why I'm following my mate to his place... for his own safety.

Brennan had even asked to borrow his brother, Eion's, quad cab pick-up, since Wilson knew Brennan's Jeep on sight. When Eion had asked if he wasn't getting a little paranoid, to Brennan's surprise, Eion's mate had come to his rescue.

Castrose had wrapped his arm around Eion's waist and tugged him against his side. "Always trust your gut," the big sniper and assassin had cautioned. His blue eyes held a chilly frostiness that only ever seemed to melt when he eyed Eion or Castrose's brother, Clayton. "If you think there will be trouble, then prepare for it. Better to be prepared than wrong."

Eion had dipped his head in acknowledgment. Then he'd asked, "Do ye want us to come?"

"Uh..." Brennan had rubbed the back of his neck. "Sure?"

That response found Brennan in the back seat of the quad cab, which was good, since the windows were tinted. Even if Wilson had looked, he wouldn't have been able to see him.
